Baby Facts Few People Know
Early childhood development is an amazing subject. The process by which a small ball of cells becomes a fully functional person will blow your mind. There is more to being a baby than is immediately discernable. Babies are adorable and very complicated beings. In order to develop normally, there are very specific needs that a baby's parents need to meet and take care of. Being a baby is far from simple. Being a parent is easier if you understand what is going on as your child grows from baby to small kid to teenager and onward.
Babies are not skilled at telling the difference between most of the colors they see. A baby's eyes are still developing when she is born and the synapses between and her eyes and her brain are not yet mature. This is one of the reasons why babies respond better to primary colors whey they are used in a room or on toys. You should focus the color scheme for your baby on bright reds and blues and greens or even on black and white. Babies can't tell the difference between pastels.
This is often the motivation behind a baby's toy preferences. What this means is that all of the black and white stuff that you think of as ugly is actually better for your baby's eyesight and brain development than the more traditional and popular pastel based decorations and toys.
In spite of taking a few months to start forming words that adults can identify, the range of sounds babies can make is amazing. It takes a while for an infant's voice box to finish forming, which is why it can make so many amazing sounds so soon! This is why an infant's vocal range is wider than that of an adult. It doesn't take long for a baby to learn how to assign a sound to an object or idea. This is what teaches a mother to identify what it is her baby needs or wants simply by listening to the sounds he is making. A baby's first word is usually one that he can make using the consonants made by the front of his mouth and a couple of vowel sounds. Babies will usually say "dada" before "mama" because "dada" uses the front of the mouth and is easier for the baby to learn to say-and it's first utterance is almost always an accident!
Even though babies can make a wailing sound as soon as they are born, the presence of actual tears does not usually occur until the baby is at least two or three weeks old. Tears contain stress induced hormones. This is one of the reasons that stress makes people cry: the body forces the stress induced hormones out of the body to calm itself down. Babies are not able to make this hormone before they are born. Sometimes real tears take a few weeks to show up because it takes the baby a while to begin producing the stress hormone. Still other babies can take up to a few months to show signs of actual tears (remember, every baby is different). Babies are incredibly surprising beings. Nobody really knows exactly how they learn or how quickly they learn it. Babies are constantly growing and changing and watching them mature and develop is something everyone should experience.
